There are two main types of rakes–garden rakes and leaf/lawn rakes. Garden rakes are used for levelling dirt and removing stones or weeds to prepare an area–unlike a hoe, they’re not usually suitable for working in planted areas as they pick up everything in their path. Garden rakes usually have strong metal teeth to dig into the ground.

A leaf or lawn rake is usually much lighter and is designed to clear leaves and other debris from the surface of your lawn or garden. It comes into its own during autumn, but can also be useful in spring for clearing away dead grass and moss, for clearing areas under evergreen trees or hedges or even for clearing fallen leaves from pond surfaces (if your rake is waterproof).
