To cut thicker branches than secateurs or loppers will allow, a saw can come in useful. A pruning saw has a handle and a tapered blade, so is easier to for one person to use and to manoeuvre around other branches. Usually, it cuts on the pull stroke, but you can get some that are suitable for cutting on both the push and pull movement. For easier storage or portability, look for pruning saws with foldaway blades. A bow saw is usually used for cutting through thick branches or trunks after they have been removed.
